The Bank was founded in December 1986 as the Export Development Bank (Pol. Bank Rozwoju Eksportu). In 1990, the Bank began the process of privatization through the public offer of shares on the stock market. The first companies of the group were established in 1991: Biuro Maklerskie BRE Brokers (now Dom Inwestycyjny BRE Banku) and BRE Services (now BRE Leasing). In 1992, the Bank was privatized and the main co-owners of the bank were Commerzbank, Banca Commerciale Italiana, Erste Bank. In October of the same year, the bank was listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. In 1998, BRE Bank united with the Polish Development Bank (Pol. Polski Bank Rozwoju). On July 22, 1999, the Boards of BRE Bank and Bank Handlowy officially announced their intention to merge. In case the plan had been carried out, it would be the largest bank merger in Poland, and the new bank would be the largest in volume of capital and in servicing of corporate clients. In order to improve the competitiveness, the management of BRE Bank decided to join individual customer service market by the bank. To implement the foregoing plan, mBank brand was created in 2000, and in 2001 - MultiBank. Since 2007, mBank began to provide its services in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
