The European Commission has officially encouraged the Bulgarian government to close the citizenship-by-investment program, but the country's authorities do not intend to close it. Thus, Bulgaria intends to keep the Golden Passport program, despite the requirements of the European Parliament.
Today, everyone who invests 1 million leva in the country's economy, which is equivalent to 500 thousand euros, in one of the projects determined by the state, can obtain a Bulgarian passport. A Bulgarian passport can also be obtained if you live in Bulgaria for 1 year and invest 2 million leva (1 million euros) in any project. Among other things, you can purchase securities of Bulgarian companies or government bonds.
Nevertheless, according to research agencies, the Golden Passport program does not bring significant dividends to the country. For 8 years of its existence, only 98 foreigners have used this option.
