The Greek government has passed the bill, which provides for new requirements for those who wish to obtain citizenship. Now, the republic’s passport applicants will have to pass exams. According to the new law, those who wish to obtain Greek citizenship will have to pass five basic exams, which include:

  • history;
  • culture;
  • geography;
  • politics;
  • Greek language.

All exams, except for the Greek language, are taken orally. The Greek language must be taken as a written test. The Greek Ministry of the Interior forms the commissions, which will conduct the exam. One of the commissions will deal with the preparation of examination questions, and the other will be entrusted with organization  and testing.
The Greek government made the decision to pass exams in order to speed up the processing of applications for citizenship. The first examination session will take place in May 2021.
